What is Gravity Die Casting?

Gravity die casting (also known as permanent mold casting) is a precision metal forming process where molten metal—typically aluminum, zinc, or magnesium alloy, which is poured into a reusable metal mold (die) under the force of gravity, without external pressure. Once the metal cools and solidifies, the die is opened to extract the finished part, and the mold is reused for subsequent casts.

Compared to sand casting, gravity die casting offers several advantages, particularly in precision and consistency. It enables the production of parts with tighter tolerances, smoother surface finishes, and greater dimensional accuracy. Thanks to the durable metal molds, it also reduces per-unit cost over medium-to-high production volumes.

Because of these benefits, gravity die casting is widely used for components such as automotive housings, heat sinks, and industrial fittings. It’s especially favored in industries that demand both precision and scalability— from automotive and electronics to consumer and industrial hardware.

Gravity Die Casting Surface Finishing Options

Gravity die casting parts often require post-processing to improve appearance, dimensional accuracy, or corrosion resistance. Depending on your material and end-use requirements, we offer a variety of surface finishing options.

Gravity Die Casting FAQs

Have questions about Gravity Die Casting? We’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions to help you understand our processes better.

Our standard lead time is 3–5 weeks for metal mold fabrication, with production cycles of 1–2 weeks per batch, depending on part size, complexity, and order volume. For rush orders, we can expedite mold processing by 20–30%—just specify your deadline when inquiring.
Due to the metal mold investment, our MOQ for new custom parts starts at 500 pieces, which balances mold cost amortization. For repeat orders or simpler designs, we can negotiate lower quantities. Send your requirements for a tailored quote.
We specialize in aluminum alloys (e.g., A380, A356), zinc alloys, and magnesium alloys. These materials offer excellent flowability in gravity filling and are ideal for parts that need a good strength-to-weight ratio and surface finish. Our team can recommend the best alloy for your performance needs.
Yes, we produce precision metal molds in-house (typically steel or cast iron). For prototyping, we offer short-run trial casts using simplified molds to validate designs before full-scale production, ensuring fit and function early in development.
We provide comprehensive post-processing including CNC machining, anodizing, chromating, polishing, and assembly. These services ensure your parts meet final dimensional and aesthetic requirements without needing multiple suppliers.
Definitely. Our engineers will analyze your design to improve mold filling, reduce porosity, and enhance structural integrity. Upload your CAD files for a free DFM assessment focused on gravity die casting suitability.
Gravity die casting offers better dimensional accuracy than sand casting and lower tooling costs than high-pressure die casting. It’s ideal for medium-volume (500–100,000 units) parts needing good surface finish—balancing precision, cost, and production efficiency.
